This was a busy day! We started with a drive to Mornington Peninsula to see the Shanck Lighthouse. If you look south, it is 1800 miles to Antarctica. When the wind blows from the south, they capture containers of air to use as the standard for testing for air purity.
Next on to a vineyard for a wonderful lunch. Dessert was at Red Hill Strawberry Farm where they grow strawberries to supply grocery stores. This company has several farms in different states so they can grow berries year round. They employ about 100 people full time to pick and plant the berries.
We saved the best for last: the Penguin Parade on Phillip Island. Saw many wallabies, MANY penguin burrows (with molting penguins in several), and at nightfall watched the penguins (the world's smallest, Blue Penguins) come ashore. It was an amazing site!
One final highlight was seeing the Southern Cross in the sky as we walked from the water back to the bus. This constellation is on the New Zealand flag and is only visible in the Southern Hemisphere.
